Six years ago, our organisation was honoured to have the 'Welcome to Yorkshire' CEO Gary Verity as the keynote speaker at our 2011 Annual Lecture at Huddersfield University Business School.
In this speech to our organisation, Gary set out incredibly ambitious and innovative plans for putting Yorkshire on the centre stage, not just here in the UK, but throughout the entire world.
Some would have said his plans were ‘pie in the sky’ or over-ambitious, but Gary Verity is not a man to let anything stand in the way of his vision to turn Yorkshire into a world-leading destination.
But four years later and Yorkshire is now well and truly on the world map. Under the leadership of Gary Verity, the achievements of Welcome to Yorkshire over the last few years have been numerous. And of course, topping them all is the amazing achievement of bringing the Tour de France to Yorkshire - an event that brought millions of people out onto the streets and lanes of our villages, towns and cities, and putting the word YORKSHIRE onto the world stage where it belongs.
Yorkshire Managers had been leading the campaign for Gary Verity to be knighted. So we were delighted that in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list last year, Gary was awarded a Knighthood for Services to Tourism.
